Organic Silk Eye Mask

If you are like us, you are very careful about what goes on your face. We avoid cleansers, creams and makeup with harmful chemicals, so why should our face mask be any different?

This eye mask is made from luxuriously soft organic peace silk dyed with organic plant dyes.  No synthetic chemicals here - just all natural silk and plant dyes for a stressless sleep.

Made with organic non-violent silk, an organic cotton fabric insert and dyed with plants. Hand-dyed using traditional shibori techniques. The natural dyes and shibori techniques means that each piece has natural color variations. Each one is unique.

Also, due to the hand-made nature of these masks, and the fact that no chemical adhesives or synthetic fusing were used during production (unlike conventional eye masks), each one is different and unique.

Unlike industry-standard petroleum-based dyes, the avocado pink eye mask is dyed with organic avocado seeds and madder roots, the sky blue mask is dyed with organic indigo leaves, the iron black mask is dyed with organic oak galls, myrobalan fruit and wood from the Campeche tree, the smoky purple mask is dyed with organic oak galls and madder roots, and the neutral color is dyed with walnut husks.

Avocados are super healthy for you and the seeds in particular are high in antioxidants, giving them anti-inflammatory properties.

Madder root is one of the oldest natural dyes, known for its ability to make beautiful reds. It has been safely used for thousands of years, since at least ancient Egypt (cloth dyed with it has even been found alongside the possessions of King Tut).

Indigo leaf dye has been safely used for thousands of years (dating back to 2000-3000 B.C.) for its ability to make strong and beautiful blues. In the 1800s, natural indigo was almost completely replaced by synthetic indigo, which is derived from the known toxin aniline - a chemical that has been used to make rocket fuel. It is estimated that about one third of aniline residue remains on conventional jeans.

Oak has natural antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties that help reduce skin irritation.

The dried fruits of myrobalan trees used for dyeing are commonly used in ayurvedic and traditional Tibetan medicine. Because myrobalan is very high in antoxidants, it has been used to protect against various age and heart related diseases.

Wood from the Campeche tree (also known as logwood) has been safely used in Europe since the 1500s, and by the Mayans for hundreds of years before that. It is prized for creating longlasting blacks with the addition of iron.

Walnut husks are the outer shell of a walnut that is leftover after then walnuts are removed. Dye from walnut husks is one of the oldest known dyes, and was commonly used in inks for writing. We upcycle these husk to create beautiful colors from food waste.

The silk used in these eye masks is non-violent silk (also known as Ahimsa silk) in which the moths are allowed to hatch naturally from the cocoon, rather than being boiled alive as is standard for conventional silk. The silk is ethically sourced from small family farms in rural India.

The dyes and sewing thread used are GOTS certified organic. GOTS certification, in additional to its strict environmental standards, also certifies that every company involved in the production of the fabric provides fair wages and safe working conditions.

This elastic is from a company that practices fair trade throughout its supply chain.

Made with upcycled, organic non-violent silk and GOTS certified organic cotton sewing thread and plant dyes - the highest standard in organic. Every step - from the growing of the cotton, to final manufacture, is independently verified to be organic.

The elastic is 60% certified organic cotton and 40% natural rubber.

Also, the plants grown for natural dyes remove more carbon from the atmosphere during their growth than is released during the dyeing process, helping to reverse the cause of global climate change.

Wash by hand when needed with a mild, pH-neutral detergent. Shape and lay flat to dry.
