Organic Indigo Leaf Dyed Jean Shorts

The model is 5'10" and wearing a size medium. The waistband is 32.5" on a size small and the inseam is 4.5".

Unlike industry-standard petroleum-based dyes, these shorts are dyed with organic indigo leaves. The indigo silver shorts are overdyed using organic pomegranate peels.

Indigo leaf dye has been safely used for thousands of years (dating back to 2000-3000 B.C.) for its ability to make strong and beautiful blues. In the 1800s, natural indigo was almost completely replaced by synthetic indigo, which is derived from the known toxin aniline - a chemical that has been used to make rocket fuel. It is estimated that about one third of aniline residue remains on conventional jeans.

Pomegranate peels are rich in vitamins and antioxidants, even more than the juicy pomegranate seeds. The peels are anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial and are consistently used in beauty products for maintaining healthy skin.

The fabric used in these shorts is GOTS certified, which in additional to its strict environmental standards, also certifies that every company involved in the production of the fabric provides fair wages and safe working conditions. This fabric was manufactured into shorts in Los Angeles by a small company that likewise provides its workers safe working conditions and fair wages.

These jean shorts are made with GOTS certified organic fabric, sewing thread, and plant dyes - the highest standard in organic. Every single step of in the creation of this piece, from the growing of the cotton and linen, to final manufacture, is independently certified to be organic.

Also, plant dyes do not produce toxic run-off like conventional (and other organic dyes) and plant dyes remove carbon from the air during the plant's growth, helping reverse the cause of global climate change.

These shorts also include buttons and rivets made with Oeko-Tex 100 certified non-toxic metal alloy. Oeko-Tex 100 is a strict environmental standard certifying that the metal is free of heavy metals and toxic chemicals.

The leather label on the back of the shorts is vegetable tanned leather from pasture-raised cows. The leather were upcycled from production scraps of Farrier Leather's sustainable bag production.

Machine wash on gentle cycle using a mild pH-neutral detergent and without fabric softeners. Tumble dry on low.
